Standing Bear Council March Meeting

The Standing Bear Council will host its March membership meeting on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hawkeye Restaurant, 105 N. Park Drive, Keokuk. Those wishing to eat are encouraged to come at noon. Standing Bear Council meetings are open to all people – Native and non-Native. Please bring one canned or dry good for storage.

Rising Sun will speak about “Drum Etiquette,” including the spiritual aspects associated with drumming in Native American culture. There is a protocol, “etiquette,” between the Hand Drum and the Pow-Wow Drum.

 

He is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin, and was taught to drum by “the grandmothers, the grandfathers, my parents,” when he was a young boy. He has been a member of the Black Fox Drum Singers of Abingdon, Illinois, since 2009.

 

 

Rising Sun served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 – 1980; his service includes four tours of duty in Vietnam.

The Council will coordinate the presentation for the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America 32nd Annual Convention, “Love Our Neighbors,” June 21-22 at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, Iowa. They will discuss ongoing requests for programs and events in the Tri-State area.
